Japanese Beetle.  They swarm this time of year, and they are attracted by scent to each other to mate and eat leaves.  If you see the first ones in your yard, and squish them all, then you may get lucky and the rest will pass you by.  Trap crop for these is rose bushes, they love that.  I wouldn't recommend the lure traps they have as the lure is the scent they are attracted to, and you'll get them for sure.  You can treat your lawn with milky spore for the grubs (the larvae) but as they come from a large area, it may not solve it.  I have enough other stuff they like better, and watch for them in areas (garden) where they will cause the most damage, and kill them when I see the scouts arriving.  This year is a bad one for these.

Thanks Judy.

I remember those very words from another post.

I was afraid it was the same.
Its hard for things to find my trees up here, but the light in the back stairway attracts stuff at night.

More variety of pests this year, but Ive been diligently keeping numbers down.
2 caterpillars, a few elm leaf beetle s, aphids , and now this .

I had one zelkova, and that seemed to attract them more than anything. I don't have zelkova anymore.
