New to Bonsai
« on: April 01, 2013, 08:25 PM »
Hell All,
I am going to attempt to grow Bonsai, I was sitting here and reading about Bonsai, do I have am interest in Bonsai WOW I would say, after reading about Bonsai I have found out about Bonsai that it is an art form nothing but pure art.

So what did I do went through the seed list and this is what I picked out for now, Juniperus Chinensis, Acer buergeranum, Cotoneaster horizontalis, Wisteria sinensis, Wisteria sinensis Alba, Acer Palmatum Viridis all  of the seeds fit my growing zone witch is zone 6, plus I have picked up a book on Bonsai Basics by Colin Lewis.
I am so happy to find a web form on Bonsai and there will be a time I will ask dum questions.
For my first question is when starting seeds from scratch what type of soil is best for germination, what would you use?

Welcome to Bonsai Study Group!  Someone official will be along to give you the official welcome...

As a beginner, you will want to learn to style, pot, wire, trim, etc.  Starting from seed is really a more "advanced technique".  Really.

Find a mentor or a local club who can get you started.

Meanwhile, you should update your profile with your location to get better advice.

Welcome to our passion. Starting from seeds will take a long....long time. You may wish to start with a few trees already started for Bonsai.

Joining a club is an excellent idea.

Forgive me I do not know where in PA Pike county is, but if you are near Harrisburg, you will want to go to the MABS show over the weekend of April 19-21. There is a thread already started in the Bonsai Show Disscussion section of this board. It will be a great place to meet others into Bonsai, several of this boards members will be there. You will also be able to meet members of the different clubs....just a thought.
Again welcome to the forum.

Also, you're a lot closer to Colin Lewis where you are, than I am here.  Find a club, and when you're ready, invest in a teacher.

Seeds are the LONG way to do bonsai.  Don't get me wrong, they're a lot of fun, as long as you have appropriate expectations ...and something else to work on.  Check out a club.  Have someone in the club help you select stock (because you haven't developed an eye for what to select yet ...at least not one that can be trusted long term) and then work with it.  Grow your seeds alongside the stock, but know that you're several years out from any bonsai-specific work.  All you're doing the first 4 years is seedling prep.

Welcome!

Welcome Mikie! You will learn alot here but a club is your best bet for one on one help (specially for beginners). You can also find some collecting buddies there. You can have a nice tree in one season when you go collecting.

Good luck!
