Trunk/bark damage on dawn redwood
« on: May 01, 2015, 10:32 AM »
Anyone seen anything like this?

I planted a couple of dawn redwoods in the ground 2 years ago, to thicken the trunks for future use in a group planting. Both grew well...but late last summer I noticed some of the foliage on one turning brown/black prematurely.

This spring I noticed on that same tree, primarily the top, that the bark looked abnormal...seemed to have darkened and was peeling/pulling away from the trunk, leaving a soft/spongy layer behind. Buds are pushing out and there is green cambium underneath (see scratch mark on the second photo).

Looks like a disease of some type but I haven't been able to find anything relevant on the internet. Look familiar to anyone?

Note, I posted this on one of the facebook bonsai groups and someone suggested borer damage, which is what I first thought last fall. But I didn't see any obvious evidence of borers (holes in trunk with "stuff" coming out). I am planning to cut off the damaged area and see if there's anything in there.
