Some good reading on this page:   http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_7?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=penjing&sprefix=penjing%2Caps%2C175

Local libraries sometimes have a copy of one of more of these.

A landscape/penjing common to my area of mountains:

Thanks so much.

I have eyed this book out numerous times and actually must just go out and buy it.  The front cover penjing is my absolute favourite as you can see it was the first image I posted in the thread.

I think that even though there are many "rules" with regards to penjing / Saikei etc, it comes down to the individual on what they would like to achieve.  I think that going out to try and achieve something like some of the images I posted is exactly what it is all about for me. Whether is be a landscape in China that I have only seen on a image or video or be it the hill around the corner from my house.

Bonsai for me is a hobby.  Yes I would love to be able to be a master but I know I am far from it.  But though trial, error, failure and success, I move in a direction that is beneficial to me in my hobby.  Getting knowledge and advice from threads like this lead is an absolute gift.

So keep the ideas, knowledge and suggestions coming.

Sounds like you have a real interest and drive. I fond Penjing to be fascinating and challenging. I look forward to seeing how your efforts proceed. The best part is, all of the work is adjustable, so as your tastes and skills evolve, you can address. Good luck.

Thanks John

I think there are really some amazing penjing / Saikei out there and it is definitely a goal of mine to do one that really looks like something.

I have a Black Monkey thorn forest (Acacia Burkei) that I was looking at today that I think will do a Saikei with

Also I am going to do loads more reading up about the 2 and start to learn more about it and start to be able to differentiate between the 2.  That way it may also push me in the right direction for the 2 other projects that I have planned. 1 - My Hinoki cypress's and 2 - My Trident Maple Forest
