Late summer feels like early fall
« on: September 09, 2011, 05:50 PM »
Had a great day yesterday, worked on the new deck, which we are going to name, "Dappled Sunlight at Pavement Ends," or perhaps just "the deck." Haven't decided.

I also got the chance to work on a few trees. Didn't defoliate anything as it's too late really, but the ficus is really developing well now, perhaps next year it will be showable. The privet is also doing well and I cut back the new growth at the bottom but allowed the top to go so it would strengthen up as well. Everything is doing well, and not much to do now except be careful of night time temps for the ficus.

There's no telling what the weather will hold for us in Kansas. It may get back up over 90f for any number of days, right up into October, or it may bring an early freeze and then a warmup. Just another season in paradise.

STL can be the same. Today though was delightful 65 and a light drizzle all day on the benches. The trees gave a deep sigh of relief. Beats the 100+ and no rain.

Beautiful here too. Low 70's. Blue skies & sunshine. After many days of relentless rain and serious flooding - a break!

Perfect timing. Our club had scheduled a "Bonsai Search (and rescue) Party" for today and it looks like we can go ahead with plans after all. We will gather at two local nurseries in the afternoon and fan out (scramble) to find material for future 'masterpieces' which we will bring back to our October meeting. There we will show-&-tell, discuss our plans, and begin the journey towards creating bonsai. A little water will not deter us.

Bonsai clubs can be fun!   :D

And after our long hot summer, leaves are already covering the new deck before I can even get it finished!

Hey Marc,
Great reminder. Oh Yeah!  Dig around those roots a bit. Check 'em out.
Hope you can join us - but I know it's quite a long trip.
We hope to have some interesting news for you soon concerning next June's scheduling.
(not the 9-10th)

We just came out of a few 95+ degree days here in San Diego (and a region-wide blackout... plants didn't mind that a bit :-), and today it's fantastic. Some high clouds, about 75-80. Things can get pretty hot and dry in September/October, so I'm not quite counting my chickens... would love for fall to start now, though!!!
