How often do you turn your trees?
« on: April 16, 2012, 07:03 PM »
After rereading one of the juicy debate threads I was thinking about what we teach, what we share, and what we forget to share.

I mentioned turning my trees a while ago during one of my study groups.  One of the participants hadn't been turning his trees, and I had neglected to mention it before then.

How often do you turn your trees?  Are you on a schedule?  How do you condition yourself to remember?

I turn mine every month to month and a half.  I have been turning them 180 degrees.  I don't write anything down in a calendar, I just go from memory.

Another question is do you turn your trees 90 degrees or 180?

I actually turn my trees very rarely - if ever.  My benches are south facing, so I have the fronts of all my trees facing south.  I figure that trees in nature don't get turned, so why would bonsai need to be turned (I know the reasons people turn their bonsai, it's a rhetorical question.)  Since we generally want the growth coming toward the front, this seems to work OK.

My yard doesn't get enough sun, and the house faces east.  Not ideal.  I turn 180 about every 2 weeks, or whenever I remember thereafter.  :)

With just a couple of exceptions, I turn mine a quarter turn once a week.  It is my version of church on Sunday mornings.

That's why I leave the big ones for you. Wife isn't much help these days when I ask for manual labor help.

Matsu, not to get personal here, but if you had used viral protection you wouldn't have uploaded that viral based DNA delivery vehicle that resulted in the founding of the "Little Dictator" enterprise management device. It is all related to Cyber Security, and oh yeah, bonsai.

The wife insisted it was time to work on version 2. It's still in beta, so I'm sure what to expect. I'm told they are buggy for the first 18-26 years though.  I'll let her know you called it a virus. ;)

I guess I should have labeled this thread "Do you turn your trees".

My larger trees all sit on turntables on my benches, making it easy to rotate them. I don't have a schedule but usually rotate them a little bit once or twice a week as I do my daily visits with the trees.

That's what I do.  Nice and easy to keep track that way.

I forgot to turn a spruce last year and ended up with a million buds on 1 side and none on the other.
The tree literally had a line down the center when looking from the top.

I turn them every month or so now.
