Title: How long does it take you to water?
Post by: Yenling83 on November 04, 2013, 10:42 AM
I'm just curious to hear an estimate of how long it takes you to water and what type of system you use? You could break it down by season, or just an estimate over the year.

-Currently I water by hand and I guess on average it takes about 15-20 min to water all my trees.

I am in the 20 to 30 minute range. Usually longer in the heat of summer and less in the fall. I water by hand, but use drip irrigation for some of the material growing in the ground. The summer is the most intense period - simply because the heat on the surface of the pot/container can damage roots. I usually start to relax the first/second week of September.

Also..if trees are spread out in mutliple locations that can add to the overall time. Watering is relaxing and gives time to think and look at trees...I enjoy it. Tom

30 min every day in summer. Hardly ever now till spring.

I use a 1gl juice bottle with holes in the lid.   About once a week they get flushed in the sink for a while. Hour plus those days.

I keep a couple inside and out that can wilt, when they do, everything gets watered. Those are the ones I "listen" to.

3 hours per day if by hand, 2hours when using the automated system. Once or twice per week in late fall/winter when the trees aren't frozen.

Yes, I wonder if anyone can exceed Kirby's time?  Sounds like you need some apprentices!

During the spring through fall 15 minutes or so does it. I use a hose with a water wand equipped with a fine rose. Sometimes I water with a watering can. From late fall through early spring I water only once in a while, approx every four to six weeks. OK, i do not have any tropicals and all my trees take a winter nap.

It takes me anywhere between 15 to 45 minutes. The long days are usually every other day during the hottest part of the summer. Many of the collected trees are in larger collection boxes and don't need a full watering every day unless it's scorching.

Yen, I will gladly pay you $100 per month plus food and a place to sleep for the next five to seven years if you water and do other bonsai work for me, everyday. Not sure you wife would care for it, but heck we all make sacrifices. Hubris, 8 trees, low water pressure........ ;). Could probably do in half to quarter the time with higher pressure and reasonable flow rate.

Care to explain your watering process if you can make 8 trees last 3 hours? Makes me feel like i'm slacking

Lol.... Hubris, if John only has 8 trees... then I only have 8 legs. I doubt he even knows how many. Heck, I don't know how many I have and he's been seriously into bonsai far longer than I have.

I water by hand and takes 15 to 20 minutes but I like to spend at least 30 minutes every morning during the growing season, just to enjoy.

I have some trees close to the house that get morning sun only and am able to use the hose. I schlep watering cans to my full sun benches which are a distance from the house.

Best,

Yenling, another interesting question in addition would be: Do you each water once a day or ever more often? In Japan they water 3 to 4 times a day. (That doesn't mean each tree is watered 4 times, only as needed. But they are going through the trees 4 times each day checking.) Now, most of us have jobs that would make watering more than once or twice completely impractical, but the professional nurseries in Japan are able to be very precise due to the attention given to watering. -- I don't know if this is exactly the same at every Japanese nursery.

i water with a copper watering can which has developed a nice patina and looks old but it takes me around 45 minutes to water and during the summer i water once at 5am and a second if needed at 6pm. i've always like watering with the can as when watering it let's me keep a close eye on the trees

It usually takes me about a minute to water my trees outside, but today there was a bit of icy slush in my hose so it took probably three minutes. I only currently have 7 trees outside so it's a light load... For now....

Dan-Yes that is an interesting topic.  I'm a bit lucky in this matter and not so lucky in others because I live on the Central Coast of CA where the temp does not fluctuate all that dramatically.  However in summer I do water certain trees more than once.  I also work 10 hrs/day M-F.  So that means I water right before work and right when I get home.  Usually I only have to water more than once in summer.  I plan to set up an auto watering system so I can water for a 2nd,3rd or 4th time during the day.

Some ways/reasons I am currently using managing watering when trees need it more than once/day:
-chopped New Zealand sphagnum moss on the soil surface(when needed)
-my collection is mostly med-large size trees
-keeping trees in manageable pot sizes-larger than show pot size
-using shallow trays with lava on top of them and watering the tray, then putting the tree on this tray(when needed)

Probably 11/2 hrs in the morning from as soon as it is light enough, during the dry season. Needs two passes.
In the evening, one pass before 4.30 p.m. or so.

In the wet season by observation, and then usually once in the morning.
Watering can and it is a pleasure.
Good Day

In the summer, I often spend more than 30 minutes, twice a day watering with a hose set to shower or mist. Once a week, I add liquid fertilizer and water from a 2 gallon can, which adds a good 15 minutes to the schedule. This time of year, it's less than 15 minutes, once a day, as not everything needs water on any given day.

At least half the time it used to.  I got a battery powered 9 gallon sprayer, and no longer have to make multiple fill ups of my watering can.  And can add the fert all at one time.  Drags around the yard super easy, had to extend the hose it came with, but that's easy.  And the small nozzle head is easier to get where I want it when I'm watering in the cold greenhouse.

In the summer time, it takes me an hour to water the first time, and the ones that need a second watering, another half hour. I water by hand and have a 600 gallon rain water collection system. In the winter, I water the tropical trees  maybe once a week, especially the smaller pots, and the non-tropical about once every 10 days. Fertilizing is a different story. I mix my own, and it takes about 5 hours, once a week. Sometimes I fertilize half one day and half another, so it doesn't take all day.

Being an OAP, I spend most of my day in my garden working on my trees or sitting in the sun. The missus counted about 360 trees mostly ShoHin. All trees are on the benches under a transparent roof, so I have control over the watering. I do get funny looks when watering the trees in the pouring rain  ???.
I water by hand, in the summer I water once in the morning all the trees, the rest of the day the trees get water when they are dry(ish). Especially the smaller trees need a watchful eye as they get scorched easily.
All in all, the morning watering and the afternoon watering takes me about an hour, then there is the walking along the benches to see if there is a need somewhere, I do that often during the day sometime just to look and touch a tree or two (or ten).
I use a small watering can (1.5ltr.), I find it very relaxing to walk and water.
