Hinoki and Hello
« on: July 08, 2010, 05:49 PM »
Hello everyone,
This is my first post on this site so I thought I would post the tree I have been working on the longest. This is a Hinoki cypress that I picked up at a local garden center about 8 years ago.. I was not in bonsai very long at the time, maybe a year or 2. Probably not the best choice for a beginner..lol.. Anyway, even after making every mistake possible, the tree has forgiven me and has actually done really well.

Every couple of years I go through this tree thoroughly, as far as pruning and making changes, if necessary. This year, there was quite a bit of work done to try to shorten the branches to get it back into good proportions. Sometimes it's difficult with this species due to no back budding and die back. The branches are still a bit long, but it is an improvement.  I believe this is now the look that the tree will maintain for a long time.

Anyway, here are the pics. They are all how the tree looks now. The last pic is the side by side of the tree shortly after purchase and how it looks today.

Comments are welcome

Rob

Welcome Rob.  Looks good and healthy.  Though, the branches are a little too "perfect" for my liking.  Have you thought about arranging them differently to appear more natural?  What are your thoughts for the next step(s)?

Hello Bonai group admin..Thank you for the welcome. I believe I missed my 45 minute time frame. However, I will be conscious to post files instead of the links..Thanks again

Hello John,
The last wiring, that is still on there is holding alot of the sub branching in place. It is kind of messy when the wire comes off. I agree that it looks almost too perfect, in some aspects...For now, I will just let this new wiring set... I like leaving my options open for this tree. It has not been easy sometimes, over the years to maintain lots of healthy growth. Especially maintaining a look of heathy young foliage so close to the trunk.

I think one issue that has happened was that the growth kind of got away from me about 2-3 years ago.. The branches became over grown. I had to be careful and use the remaining options to cut back and wire new ends to somewhat get the branches back in check. I would like to do more. However, without budding back and winter die back, this is pretty much it... It is actually the careful manipulation of wiring that allows this tree to look like there is much interior growth.. At some point, I may re-evalute the tree and see...
