Title: Hello
Post by: bonsai eejit on March 04, 2011, 05:15 PM

Just joined this forum and thought I would introduce myself. I'm Ian, aka 'bonsai eejit', and I'm from Northern Ireland. My normal bonsai forums are 'Wee Trees' and 'IBC'. I also lurk on Ausbonsai. Wayne was chatting with me on the IBC and told me about you lot. Can't believe I missed another English speaking bonsai forum!!

I've been into bonsai since 1993 and am chairman of my local club, NI Bonsai Society. (
I have my own Bonsai Blog which I treat as an online diary. (

I hope to add a bit here when I can. Some of your more regional stuff I can't help with and on most occasions, I'll be trying to learn from you  :)

Here's a few of my trees.

Scot's Pine

Japanese Larch

Japanese Maple

Trident Maple

Hello, Ian, and welcome.  :) You've certainly got some nice trees. Your pine is particularly impressive!

Welcome to the Bonsai Study Group.  Please take a moment to read the Welcome thread (

If you have images to share with your post we ask that you upload them here. Ideally we want users to upload their photos here for discussion, as often external links and embedded photos become broken as images and other files are removed or URLs change.  Additionally, images posted here are hidden from guests, encouraging visitors to register for the site and contribute to the community.  You can still embed uploaded images within your post using Bulletin Board Code and the uploaded image URL.  If you need a reference please visit the help section of this site. If you need further assistance please feel free to post your question to the forum feedback section.

You are allowed to edit a post for up to 45 minutes.  If that time passes and you wouldn't mind uploading your photos in a separate post a forum moderator will be happy to edit and place the images for you.

Welcome Ian.  Some great looking trees you have there.

Ian, beautiful trees.  Thanks for sharing them.  Not only do the trees look nice, they seem to be well photographed.

Regarding our wanting the images hosted on this site for longevity/archival purposes, we've set the limits on image sizes more generously than any bonsai forum that I'm aware of to make it easier to share them.  (Effectively no physical dimension limits and 256kb file size.)

We're under-represented as far as your area goes.  Are there any shows or exhibitions in your region?

Hi Wayne, thanks for the invite :-) I'll have to have a play around to figure out how to upload here. I'll maybe try tonight as I've a hectic bonsai day planned  ;D

Thanks for all the kind comments folks.

Treebeard55, here's a link to more info on the Scot's Pine (

As far as Exhibitions go, we just fall in with all the major expos in Europe, a short flight gets you anywhere you want these days. The bonsai scene in Ireland as a whole is poor compared to elsewhere. We are the only 'Major' Club for the whole of Ireland, we started in 1986. The Republic of Ireland has no club that I'm aware of and we have members travelling up from Dublin to Belfast to ours. We don't even have a decent bonsai dealer here either. Everything is mail order or brought over to club events. We may be a big Island, but we're still an Island  :'(

Ok, Here's a Rhododendron 'Blue Diamond', some flowers on the Cherry above and a shot with me in it for scale and to show you what my ugly mug looks like.

Love the drama in your rhodie's base.

We try to get to Ireland every few years; fell in love with the place on our honeymoon. Maybe next trip we'll try to take in the North, too. It would be great to see your trees directly, if you don't mind such a thing.

Very nice trees. I especially like the cherry. Don't see too many of those, much less with such an explosion of flowers. It's almost cherry blossom time here in Washington DC too.

Thanks Guys,

Treebeard, you are more than welcome in my garden. Come North and see bonsai, Belfast, and our stunning North Coastline with the Giant's Causeway. I may even treat you too a pint of Guinness  ;D

Bonsai and Guiness -- how could I say no??

My wife is leaving on a long-desired "by-myself" vacation in less than two weeks; her stay will be almost entirely in the Midlands, in the general area from which my 4-greats-grandfather Robinson left Ireland in 1822. (BTW, one local landowner said I still qualify as a "local!" Love it!)

But the next time we all come, I'll see if it would work out, on both sides, to stop and see your garden; very kind of you to offer!

I'd like to see the north. Partly because CS Lewis describes it so lovingly in "Surprised by Joy," partly because my 7-greats-grandfather Moore was born in Belfast, in the mid-1600's. He and his wife brought our line of Moores across the Atlantic.

I'm hoping only a handful of you make it over, otherwise you'll drink me dry  ::) ;D

and steal your trees

I'll take that as a compliment  ;D

I'm actually in Orlando, Florida for 4 weeks this July and during the middle 2 weeks, I'll have another NI bonsai enthusiast staying near me. We discussed dumping the wives at the pool for the day and trying to find some bonsai. Any Offers?

Pulled this list of Orlando-area bonsai nursuries off the Central Florida Bonsai Club site: (

If you have a car, you're in luck...

Also, the local bonsai club near Orlando has a regular display of bonsai at Epcot Center in the spring. I don't know, however, if it's going on now.

This year the EPCOT show runs from March 2nd through May 15th, 2011.   Looks like you'll miss it.

General info: (

A little video tour from Orlando Bonsai: (

I'm not sure of the exact admission price, but nothing on the Disney Campus is cheap.

Another event that you'll miss (posting in case anyone else might be interested), the annual BSF convention is June 10-12th.   At the Ramada Celebration (Orlando).

Ryan Neil stops by the sunshine state, Erik Wigert, et al.  Workshops, demos, vendors ,etc.  I'm really looking forward to it. (
