Hard Frost Forecasted For St. Louis Tonight
« on: April 08, 2010, 10:21 PM »
Hi All,

A hard frost is expected in St. Louis tonight as the temp drops to 36 degrees. Shimsuki and I just finished moving all our trees back into the pool cabana and the garage to keep the young foliage protected. Not taking any chances.

It was cooler here this morning than I'd expected, but no frost and nothing below 40°f.  You're wise not to risk it though.  Enjoy the bonsai two-step.

Earlier in the week they were predicting 36 overnight low Friday night (tonight).  Now the forecast is for 40.  Hoping I can trust them.  :)

Don,

That's why I am glad I am not there. Snow in April! How long is your normal growing season?

Temp did drop to 36 but no frost on ground at my place. Did notice some on the roofs and the cars that where not parked in their garages. Our trees had a great nights sleep in a safe location.

OK, the snow has reached Vermont. This morning at 6:30 we have snow and temp of 33 degrees. Glad I brought the trees in last night. They may get to spend a few days inside.

Trees are out April to November.  Most of mine are wintered in a greenhouse so I get a jump on the season, usually beginning in March.  They shut down for a bit in July, then slow again in late September, depending on what has been done to them.  Its a great season for maples, hornbeams and the like.  Red pine thrive, as do whites.  Jbp do well too but we don't have the sun as you all in the south.  I'm in the snow belt and we tend to get snow and rain and moisture, and the trees love it.
