Hand made fertilizer went bad
« on: March 16, 2013, 11:37 PM »
Made fertilizer from bone meal, cottonseed, fish meal and fish emulsion, and put into airtight container.  Must not have been airtight as it is no green with a fuzzy covering.  I think it is trash...........comments?

I've had the same thing happen its fine to use, you arent eating it! They are organic components, when they are in the soil they are broken down in the same matter only at a microscopic level.  May not smell great but they will work the same as always.

Is it possible that you put it away somewhat damp?  Airtight container or no, stuff will grow on fertilizer with a bit of moisture.

Spread it out on a cookie sheet and let it dry in the sun (may take a few days), then containerize and store.  Don't worry about the mold.

When I make it I try to do when I know it will be dry and hot for about 4 days. You need to dry them fast or they will mold. But, it doesn't matter a bit. Folks, like you, just don't like the looks of them, but they work just fine and it doesn't hurt a thing..  In the past when that happened I used them on MY trees. I also started drying them inside my empty greenhouse in the summer where it could get to 120 F and dry them REAL QUICK!

That's fine to use, in fact it's probably slightly stronger now.  But also smells worse!

No. They're fine. Plants LIKE decomposed stuff. Some can't use organic fertilizers unless it's a bit rotted.
