Good Deal on Masakuni Tools right now
« on: May 05, 2011, 03:32 PM »
Wish I had some more cash laying around right now, I would take advantage of the 20% off Masakuni tools at http://www.californiabonsai.com/  I have purchased Masakuni tools from California Bonsai in the past and am very happy with them.  Prices are already the best I can find without the 20% off.

Yes, I too just got their email.

Funny, I don't remember ever visiting their site, nor do I know who they are, nor how I got on their email list.  No about page either.  So, who are these people?  And how did I get on their list?

My contact with this entity has always been John Wang. Peter Tea has some association with them and they are young guys with the entrepreneurial spirit.

Some photo's of their booth in Riverside 2009

Notice the masakuni sale sign on the small table of tools. "2009" hmmm... still on sale two years later.

One of the pines in the booth. Not a big company and probaly will not fare the economy very well. Price of gas will eat these garage operations up. I wish them luck they have some beautiful things, much of it on consignment.

Ah, good they're in good company then.  Good looking trees, and pretty good prices, too.

That depends entirely on what one considers "good company".

Hardly, BTW the young guy in the first picture is Travis Goldstein. Main guy in the business. This is a southern Cal. institution and Peter is not directly involved with this group. He comes via John Wang and Kenny Lam.

Here is a picture of John Wang with my good friend Scott Chad (on right) King of the white pine in America.

We were all standing around this juniper that John had spent five hours carving. Not so sure about the knob he left on top. Scott just walked by and grabbed the knob and broke it right off! No more worries...be happy!

not that I am anybody on here with any clout or history, but Travis is a stand up guy and I think Masakuni tools speak for themselves. In addition to selling tools online and at local events, Travis has a small nursery where he sells trees and gives instruction.

Masakuni sale only applies to those items on the website.  Other Masakuni items are list price.  Still a good deal if you find something on the website.

Yes, Travis Goldstein is the owner He is one of my tightest Bonsai buddies. John Wang is a good friend of his (BTW, John has some of the tightest trees around himself). Travis did some studying in Japan and is an excellent artist, has some very unique products for Bonsai besides a full masakuni line such as various supplements for your trees. The last thing I picked up from him was a masakuni watering tool and a brass fitting with a valve you can control with your finger to control the amount and pressure of flow. Its absolutely wonderful and I am having a total affair with it! He built all my benches and put up the shade cloth. Where I live there is constant winds that have knocked down a wrought iron fence, and everything He put up is rock solid. He is great at diagnosing health problems with your trees and just saved my favorite tree. He will custom make soil for your needs and the general mix He has is excellent.
He is an excellent artist. He has a twisted pomagranite that can sit on any bench in a Japanese show. He is extremely honest and will back up all He sells. He is raising 3 kids and taking care of his beautiful wife on the money He makes off Bonsai, so please support him. I like the stainless steel coated masakuni tools. They hold a sharper edge than the pure stainless but don't rust like the regular tools. I think there still a %20 off sale going on, but please check with his site or call him.
