Freeze is finally ending - I hope
« on: March 09, 2014, 02:15 PM »
Having a spectacular Sunday in St. Louis. Snow is finally gone. Been repotting the trees stored in the pool cabana the last several weekends and today I opened everything up and took all the trees out and gave them a good drink and washing. They are soaking up the sun. Repotting with Hagedorn at the STL Bonsai Study Group next weekend. It will be the group's first weekend of the year and I can not wait. We have a blast and learn so much.

That's an interesting set up and an impressive collection. Do you cover that up with plywood during the winter months?

The trees outside in the "pit" are covered with the boards that make up the benches at night and stay covered during the day if the temp remains below freezing. On nice sunny windless days they are uncovered. I have used this same process for the last 5 years. My trees are healthy and content. No windburn. I have only lost one tree when we were on vacation in the middle of the summer when it was not watered properly. I've been in the hobby since september 2008 when my son and I bought our first trees. Between the two of us we have 64 trees. I try to keep the collection at no more than 60. I'll be thinning the herd slightly this year. JRob
