Perhaps there should be a discussion between a bonsai forest, penjing and saikei.  They are very different.  We should be properly describing our creations.

Not as much difference as you might think.  The Chinese definition of "penjing" easily incorporates all three.  (See:  Penjing, the Chinese Art of Miniature Gardens by Hu Yunhua).

I think it is only in the West that we consider them to be distinctly different kinds of small tree displays.  The Japanese seem to make an attempt at a distinction between Saikei and bonsai, but there are many examples where their bonsai forests start to merge into the landscapes with stones.  And a great many of Arthur Joura's landscape bonsai at the North Carolina Arboretum could easily be considered either or both.

Sometimes I think that we in the west -- and perhaps especially in the USA -- tend to get much too concerned with pigeonholes into which we can cram out little trees -- whether they really fit or not.

I think this is a very valid point.  Ultimately one has to enjoy the view of the bonsai whether it is a Saikei, penjing etc.

Very nice start.  I would shorten the two end trees -- the left one a little and the right one quite a bit.
