Ficus Project
« on: August 12, 2015, 10:44 AM »
Hi

I got this ficus from a friend in 2007 when I was very much a newbie to bonsai.  It was very pot bound and after 5 hours of getting the roots untangled and out of the pot, I pulled it over a rock and left it to grow.

In January of this year I decided to try and get more roots to grow from the base to make it look more natural so I planted it deeper into a pot and have left it.

So with Spring around the corner, I am thinking of cutting it back considerably and regrow that canopy.

I may also be able to help with the funny taper of the trunk?

Any thoughts and suggestions on this

Cut, don't cut etc?

Well, it looks like a ficus benjamina, to me, and the trunk diameter to height ratio is a bit off from the ballpark ratio of 1 to 6. To remedy that ratio you could thicken the trunk, ( the hard way ), or shorten the height. To shorten the height you could give it a trunk chop and start all over, or prune back the branches. What I would do is put guy wires on the branches and pull them all down. That would shorten the height without having to start over. Don't worry about getting the top / center to sparse, apical dominance will fix that. The wires will need to stay on for a whole growth season. Put  " horseshoe " pieces of old garden hose on the branch, to keep the wires from cutting in. With more horizontal branches, the stage will be set for any possible aerial  roots in the future. I like the front on # 8286, BTW.

If old hose pieces are not available you can use tubing for fish tanks. Very inexpensive at WallyWorld.
