Dawes Arboretum show trees
« on: June 13, 2014, 04:25 PM »
Well, in order to push myself a bit this year, I have gotten some trees ready to take to my first show. I know they are not perfect, and now I see exactly what it takes to really make a tree show worthy.  I will never again take a short cut, or put off work, as you really see what mistakes you've made when you look thru the lens of a show setting.

Thought I would first share the trees I'm taking, these pics were made here at home, as I don't know what the lighting will be like there.  I'll take shots to share of the show and post them here.

I know, no stands.... but I need to see if I enjoy this first before I go that far.  I think the shows around here are pretty low key so I don't think anyone will spit on them if there isn't a stand.... But I do think that I like the prep part at least of this, as it really makes you work on the real issues.

And the last tree, my big hackberry.  I really like how the moss came out, and the little detail where it nests in the groove of the big root.

I now have a lot of respect for anyone who shows on a regular basis, it's not so easy as it sounds.

It was a low key affair, as I expected.  There were a few nice trees there, some of them could have been better prepared, and some were actually not in great health.  I would have expected a lot less wire, and was astonished to see trees with guy wires in the show.
I did get a chance to chat with one or two nice people who brought trees, and that was enjoyable.  Not that I was disappointed, but it could have been a better experience if there had been some sort of critique period.  If they would have brought someone in at a specified time, to talk about each (or some chosen) trees and talk about good and bad points, I would have gotten more out of it.  As it was, I basically dropped them off, and picked them up, and met some others who were picking up.  If there had been a program of critique, then I would have met the other exhibitors and tree people, and had a chance to talk about the trees, and learned more about mine and others trees.
Here are photos of the other trees that were there.  I took these pre-show, so the card holders are just laying on the tables at this point.

I did like the backgrounds (at least the light tan ones) so the venue did a nice job providing a good exhibit atmosphere to see the trees against.

last ones.

I guess that I would do this again, but I would like to see more to it than the event that it was.  Perhaps I should think on taking trees to a different show next time.

Thanks for the photos Judy. Hopefully each year will be better. This post is motivating. Looking forward to develop my trees to show quality.

I love your trees Judy.  I don't think you will need to take a back door to any one at that show.

Yes, I second Don.

Your trees may not be as "finished" (some sloppy finishes eh?) but, one can see your superior techniques.

Best in show will be yours soon!

Have you considered emailing the event holders? I would listen to your suggestions on a better show, maybe they will too!

What were the little black protractor-looking things next to each tree ...and what possible good could anyone see in putting them next to (nearly) every tree?

I think they are for name cards, she mentioned they hadn't been finished yet.

Guess I should read all the way THROUGH the last sentence of her post.  Sorry for that.
