Coral Tree - Erythrina caffra
« on: December 14, 2014, 04:38 AM »
Hi

Another one of my bonsai that I would like to show.

This is a coral tree - Erythrina caffra

I believe the age to be about 25 years old.  Height is 32 cm.  I got the tree in 2008 as a gift from my father.

I do not think that the pot that it is currently in is the right one.  I think that a shallower pot will be better.  It also has to be slightly bigger so that I can show what I think is its correct front.

I definitely need to wire the lower branches so that I can spread the canopy.

Your thoughts?

Here you go!

I really like this one, maybe my favorite so far!

It looks like what those walsai ginseng ficus WISH they could be!
Fat trunk, old. Beastly!

Can't wait to see the foilage wired out!

Thanks Sorce

Yeah, I have so many that I need to wire that I am just waiting to go on leave, then will buy a ton of wire and really get stuck in as soon as I am back.

Do you agree with my plan for changing the front view?

It is hard to choose a front from your photos, if you had 4 photos from eye level of the tree that would be better. But then again the only way to be sure when choosing the front is to see the tree in person. I think you new choice could work, especially if you changed the angle the tree is planted at. You want the apex to lean slightly toward the viewer. It looks like your new front leans away from the viewer. The lean doesn't have to be dramatic, but it usually doesn't work if the tree leans away from the viewer. The base is more attractive from your new front, if you go with it, the rest of the tree needs a lot of work.

you have a great start there, nice aged trunk and bark, I will love seeing what you do with it.

Thanks for the feedback Leo.

I will take some more pictures in the the morning and post those. Also because it has this huge root piece on the side/front (which I believe adds so much character to the tree) it is difficult to fit it into a pot.

In my view ( and please advise if you think I am wrong) is the pot size mustn't be much larger then the current one it is in now. Maybe slightly and shallower but not much.

Hi

So here are 4 pictures straight from the front from each side.

Picture 3 (current back) is starting to look like the correct front to me.

I like 3 for a front. It takes the lean forward. But, if it works, I'm not against a lean away.

Pot could be quite larger. And as shallow as the roots allow. About 1\2 would be nice.

An angle change could prove dramatic. Maybe just enough to take the "stairs" Out. Those lines parallel to the pot rim can be disturbing.

I agree with you on 3 Sorce.  Especially after some wiring, it should fill out quite nicely.

I do agree on the slight rotation too.  It will definitely make a huge improvement just on the look

Hi Fredman

Thanks so much.  It is definitely one of my favourites.

It has never flowered unfortunately but I have read up about the bonsai care on this and it seems that you have to stop feeding it in Autumn and do very little watering in Winter to induce flowering.

So watch this space.  Lets see if that works.

Yeah it needs very little water in general. Rots easy to. They grow from thick cuttings easily. It should flower without to much fuss. Please keep us updated how it goes...
I imported 20 seeds but only 1 germinated. I'm sleeping with it at night  8)

Just a update on the bonsai.

After being away for just over 2 weeks on holiday, it was time to repot the Coral tree into a slightly larger and shallower pot.  There was loads of rain whilst I was away but the days were incredibly hot so the leaves grew like it was on steroids.  It has filled the canopy out nicely but it will still need to be wired.

I have made the front with the tree to the right and moving towards the viewer and also tried to elevate the right side slightly higher so as to remove the "step" (Thanks Sorce) that was created with the large root.

I will also let the tree settle in the new pot for a week or 2 before I wire the branches.

Thoughts?
