Author Topic: Collecting free-for-all in Upstate SC in March 2013  (Read 642 times)

If there are any readers in the Upstate of SC, ...or close, that are interested in collecting off 50-60 acres in a couple weeks, I may have an opportunity lining up.  I haven't seen the area, but I hear there are privet, Water Oak, various pines, Cedar and several others, likely hornbeams, elms...  I'm expecting pictures sometime this week and maybe a more elaborate list of species on the property.

A participant in our study group has access to the land and its about to be cleared.  This coming weekend is out, but after that we're going to try to set something up.  Let me know if you're interested.

You know I'd be there if I were down there. Miss this as there is no one up here to go collecting with. Those that attend the study group in Lynnville are...well...old. Course then there is finding places where you can collect. Best of luck to ya my friend. Just watch out for those "odd" hornbeams  Grin LOL

I don't know what you're looking to collect, but the Indianapolis Bonsai Club has a couple more collecting trips scheduled for March.  One is at a Christmas tree farm and surrounding woods just east of Greensburg, IN on March 23.  The second is on a piece of private wooded land near French Lick, IN on March 30.  PM me if you're interested.  Greensburg is a bit of a drive for you, but French Lick is getting closer.

Hard to say, just from one picture of the bark.  White oak, Sweetgum, and Hop hornbeam come immediately to mind, though.

looks like white oak or cedar elm but its difficult to tell from the photo

Here's the only other shot I've got.  There was a low bud and I thought I'd try to get a shot of it.  Its hard to get a picture of something like this ...in focus on a iPhone, in this lighting situation.  Here's the best I've got.

I'd guess is that it's an oak of some kind. Water oak (querus nigra) maybe?
