New to Bonsai. I was wondering what kind of charcoal is used for Bonsai and why? Thanks, Joe

Activated charcoal, many thought it worked as a pH neutralizer, it now seems that it most likely acts as a refugia for microbes that you want in your soil. I add  one cup per five gallons of soil mix- Boon has found that it works well for him, so I have adopted it.

It can be added if you like, but it's not a necessary ingredient for bonsai soil
