Celtis Africana - White Stickwood
« on: November 16, 2014, 11:20 AM »
Hi

Here is another one of my bonsai that I inherited from my late father in law.

It is a White Stinkwood - Celtis Africana and it was started in 1979.

What I am worried about is the shape and style of the tree and I believe it can be so much better.  So I decided to re pot it into a standard garden pot that is substantially bigger and leave it to grow for the next year or two.  The plan is not work to much on it except to try and get the crown of the tree to grow upwards as I believe that it will greatly enhance the overall image of the tree.

Your thoughts?

Very nice tree. I would also stay with their natural shape.  Will make a beautiful broom in time.
Roots are a bit on the thick side. You might consider layering it in the future to shorten that long trunk. That will also give you a nice even root spread.
I hope you have it in a open soil so it doesn't stay to wet.
You're a lucky man to inherit such beauties.....! Good luck with them.

Just another update on one of my trees.

With Autumn on us in full force, the White Stinkwood has lost all its leaves.  This is a great time to be able to see the ramification and growth.

I will definitely look at layering it in spring (Sept 15) to shorten the trunk.

Thanks Fred

Absolutely.  It is like waiting for a present on Christmas.

But good things come to those who wait.
