Very Nice Job!  Especially for someone who's never built anything before.  It looks clean and stable, and your kids are so cute! ;)

Thanks Chris I have to admit I was nervous when they just jumped on and started sitting but I figure they were testing it out before I put my trees on!!

Jerry I have to thank you for the design/ plans of this bench. Almost 2 years ago I was looking at bonsai bench designs and ran into yours. I loved it so much and it looked simple so I built a variation of it. I cant say it's exactly like yours but I altered what I had to in order to make it work. I've never built anything before in my life!! Your designs were so simple to follow. I know it doesnt look as amazing as yours but I'm pretty darn proud of the first thing I built lol! Oh and the kids enjoyed it as well!
Terrific! Glad it went so well for you.

My benches were the first "things" I'd ever built too...

If possible I'd like the full resolution photos and I'll put them on my bench page on Flickr here:

I actually clean mine by taking all the trees off (already a hell of a job) and climb on it and sweep the soil/akadama off with a broom. Perfectly stable still after nearly 4 years.

Funny , I was going to start a new subject about benches and checked all unread post first. So you got this one started back in 09.
Anyhow, I am redoing a large part of  my back yard moving all my cacti and succulents into one area and thereby making my upper yard all Japanese landscape which was my goal all along. I have a section of tiered four foot wide and 20 foot long raised beds that I have started ground planting some of my plants for thickening of future Bonsai. I am worn out from the digging and trips up and down the hill.
So, what I am planning is to build a Pergola of sorts. Only one sided so one row of  three  4"X 6"s  with a top cantilevered across both sides. Then at a good working height add a  bench the full length for both Bonsai work and to display my trees.  I would build a deck out of used Trex 2x6s. Because this area gets full sun all day I figured I will need the top made from 2"x 2"s separated with about a 4" gap. I could add shade cloth if more shade is required. I will end up with a convenient area to view and work on my trees with every thing in one place. I am trying to figure out how to make this structure appear more Japanese as I already have several large Japanese statues, bridge and bell hanger. I just want it all to flow together nicely.

Don

Try find the ones made by Al Keppler - there are photos somewhere on the internet which I can't seem to easily locate right now...

If you take a look at my bench photos page - referenced above - specifically This one... has some Japanese accents.

Thanks Jerry
That's real nice I like that and that top board looks a lot like my bell hanger. I found some pictures on the net last night  I searched  "Japanese Pergola", there are some interesting pics to look at.

Her is a picture of my bell hanger. I copied an old Temple gate entrance to a garden in Japan. My taste is probably a little over the top for most people.

Good point Jerry
Who, in their right mind would pull a tree out of the ground cut the roots off stick it in a shallow pot in gravel and expect it to live?????
