I can't, well ok I can believe it. But it only got to like 40 here. I would expect 50 maybe. And 6 today here.

El Nino? Global warming?

The panic is on over how severe winter is this year in Chicago. The news is full of superlative descriptions. When in reality, to the best of my recollection, this is the first winter in about 20 years that started out like winters I remember during my 20's and 30's. A "normal" zone 5 winter. We have seen so few it seems unusual.

Winter of 1982 or 1983, I forget, but New Years Eve we had a low, of real temperature of -25 F, with wind chills in astronomical numbers below zero. Global warming is real, we have not seen temperature like that here since, some 30 years later and I think the coldest we have had here is maybe a few hours at -15 F for a night.

I feel the same way, i feel the difference, no one has to tell me that the weather is changing, i know it is... That doesn't mean we won't still have fluctuations, like the actual winter we see now, but then, the seventy degree day before Christmas reminds me of the general direction upward of the weather

yesterday and today it is some 50 degrees warmer than it was seven days ago. I have got bare patches of grass showing in the back yard. That means over 18 inches of accumulated snow has melted in one week. To go from -17 F to + 42 F in 6 days is crazy.

Yep, climate has changed, normally the cold sits on top, usually centered over the north poll. This cold snap was not an increase in the amount of polar cold air, but rather the dome of cold flopped off the top, slid our way, and eastern Europe, Russia, Siberia, and western Alaska are having a record warm spell. Sort of like a hat that is slid down to the side, rather than on top. Now that the mass of cold air is mostly back up top, we are returning to our lately more typical, warmer than it should be winter. The total volume of polar cold air this year is no bigger than last year, it is just wandering around.
