Bonsai Beginner
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:39 PM »
Hello folks!

As the title states, I am a brand-spanking new fan of Bonsai. I've always found the art intriguing and wondered when I would ever take the time to pick it up. Well, this past weekend I was shopping around the flea market for some sales of fruits and veggies when lo and behold there was this guy selling some trees he was raising. I spent a fair amount of time talking to him about the basics and he graciously offered his services for whenever something flew over my head.
Its a Dwarf Japanese Juniper and is around 5-6 years old (as far as I know). I know someone will ask for a picture and I will post some as soon as I can. The gentleman has already wired it into a wind swept form ( Im sure you guys have a term for this) but it is still ripe for the molding.

Ive spent a fair amount of time searching for some online resources and found about all of you through a couple of blogs.
I look forward to annoying all of you with my beginner's questions and hope to pick of some great tips from the experts.
Any advice you have to offer me right off the bat is very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome Mikecia.....enjoy your new view of the world.  You won't see landscape the same. Trees become much more fascinating everywhere you look.

Mike, you will find that we stand on tradition around here. There is a technical name for the style your tree is in and we'd appreciate it if you would use it....

It's known as "Windswept."  :D

Seriously, welcome to the magnificent obsession and welcome to Bonsai Study Group!

Why is bonsai such an obsession? Seriously if I spent half as much time and enthusiasm with anything else I would be very successful. I've almost thought about putting a search filter on my computer so I can use it to actually do work.
