Title: best way to improve taper and enlarge trunk
Post by: BonsaiEngineer1493 on January 17, 2014, 08:30 PM
Hey!

I have two small maples that lack taper. The trunks are probably about an inch. I want to increase the trunk size and improve the taper. What are your recommendations?

I am in the same predicament .
Been bonsai crazy for 25 years. About 15 years ago I discovered  the Internet and bonsai information and you can really see it in my trees. The top half of my trees are reasonable but there is no taper in the middle section of some of my trees and I think the best solution is to layer out the good bits at the top and start over with the truck and begin the process of taper. It takes about 10 years to do it right. Hope I live that long. Been a great journey ether way.
Good luck with the trunk

Start reading up on the use of sacrifice branches.  If you don't have a branch in the right place to create the swelling you are after, approach grafting on maples is pretty straightforward and easy....
Or you can cut and regrow, but that is best done in the ground.
