Back Budding Conifers?
« on: December 08, 2014, 10:30 PM »
Hey pretty new to the bonsai, plant scene. I am wondering if there is a comprehensive list of back budding conifers available somewhere? Or if anyone could give me short list of common species used for bonsai, that are back budding conifers?

I know that bald and pond cypress back bud readily, any others that are good?

How about the Atlantic white cedar? They grow pretty wild down here in the swamps/wetlands with the cypress.

Thanks for the help in advance!

I doubt any of these are comprehensive, and none seem to focus particularly on conifers.

Do you have questions regarding the backbudibility* about a specific species or two?

Where are you located? Some more information there might help as some species may not be available where you are.

The white cedar and false cypress don't back bud reliably. Bald cypress will with a vengeance. You can also force most pines and junipers to back bud. Don't know about true cedars like Atlas or Lebanon cedar.

I am in Sunny/Swampy Pensacola FL. We have beaches to swamps to forest, REALLY humid ALL the time. Zone 8/9

Bets are off for most of species mentioned so far because of your southern location. I am not sure of JBP and junis in your area.

How about Causerina? looks like a conifer and well trained foliage give this plant a pine tree apperance.

Casuarina might be illegal to own/cultivate in Pensacola FL.  They're invasive in some locations, particularly in FL.
