Title: Back Budding Bald Cypress?
Post by: reefed419 on October 06, 2014, 03:29 PM
Hello Growers,
I am very new to bonsai and found a  nice bald cypress at the local Lowe's. However the lowest branches are at least 4' from the ground. I am wondering how much of a drastic cut back is needed to get back budding lower on the trunk? Any insight would be great. Thanks

IN THE SPRING, chop it anywhere.  It will backbud.

Yes. If healthy they can be cut back to stumps and will push lots of new growth. Wait until spring though. Good Luck!

Yes, don't cut it back 'til spring. It will be easier on your nerves to wait 'til buds start to push, that's also went I try to collect them from the wild. If you wait 'til then, the new buds should start to pop all over in 2 or 3 weeks. Before then you need to decide what type you prefer, flat top or what is often called immature look, ( pine tree shape). What you decide on will determine where you chop it. I'd leave it in the nursery pot because it will take a few years to regrow branches and it's best to leave all the roots.

In a few weeks you're going to see your Bald Cypress is going to lose all its foliage anyway.  Its Deciduous.  (Its also Evergreen ...making it one of the few Deciduous Evergreens.)

Go to YouTube and find the videos by John Geanangel.  He is in South Carolina and is one of or perhaps the most experienced and knowledgeable regarding BCs.  You can take what he says to the bank.

I have watched all of Johns Videos on his Bald Bcypress's. There is also a guy that collected some in a video series that I have watched. I believe he has a nursery in Deland, FL. Trying to learn all I can about this species in the art form.

Thanks to all who replied, and anyone got any other info, please post it up as I might have missed it in my searches.
