Title: Baby....It's Cold Outside
Post by: Jay on January 29, 2010, 06:54 PM
Greetings,
I know our friends in the southern US are getting hit with some weather. Don't know if it will make them feel any better but... it is before 7PM and my thermometer already says minus 1. It will probably go to negative 10F here by Saturday AM. OK, I admit we usually get weather like this, but I hope it reminds those in the Southern US that they are not alone.

Well bein a former hoosier(sshhh, don't tell anyone) I know all too well cold, frigid, snowy, ice weather. I moved here in Nov 2003. Since then I've experienced twisters, ice storms, snow. All things I thought I was leavin behind. Now I've been comin down here all my life, or the first 33 yrs at least, and have experienced a few light snow dustings and cold temps. I sure do miss the past mild winters we've had since 2003. If we got any nasty winter weather it was from late Jan to Easter(those late 'Easter' freezes messed up alot of trees here). It seems down here an inch or 2 of snow and ppl freak out. Where I come from an inch or 2 was a great day. Anythin below 65F and ppl complain it's cold. Where I come from -15F with windchills in the -30sF is COLD! Currently it is 38F here. That is a great day where I come from. Guess I'm hot natured down here compared to full blooded southerners(even though I'm half southerner by blood)  ;D

Steven, you wold love it this morning here in northern Vermont. It was negative 12.1 F. The skies are blue with minimal wind, just a beautiful winter day. The mountains look wonderful with the sun kissing them and slowly allowing the day to come to life.

At 8am it's 20f with 6" of snow and counting.  Sounds like a good day to sift soil in the garage.

7:30 a.m. (keeping with the theme) we had 3/4" of ice and 6" of snow on the poly houses, got it all knocked off, o collapse imminent.  It is 16 F

compared to our friends up north, this is minor, but for us southerners........ Ponderosas and RMJs out in the snow....

John you are correct up north what you're getting isn't much, but you're not up north. For your area this is tough. Each of us plan for certain conditions and when they are this far off the mark it can be hard to deal with.

On a lighter note, tomorrow my wife and I will be volunteering at our local Primitive Biathlon. We get to stand outside in what will be 5 degree temps watching ladies and gentlemen snowshoe with old time equipment and muzzle-loaders stopping at checkpoints and firing at targets, we get to score the targets. If it sounds like fun, think about coming up next winter.........

my two cents

Jay,
I commute to, and work in, South Dakota, just slightly warmer than North Dakota. The bad part of the weather here is the heavy layer of ice- something we get more of in the south than we seem to up north, where the air is cold from the ground up to the clouds most of the time......

Have fun with the folks who like to self inflict torture.
