Yes and no.
While visiting a top class nursery, I talked with the owner for quite a while ( I speak fluently Japanese) and he proposed me to come to help them only  for 2 or 3 weeks if I could not stay longer, for free. He also told me that this offer was opened to anyone who could at least speak, at least, a little Japanese.
One more reason to learn Japanese, beside its obvious cultural interest ;)

Naw, I wouldn't do that...    ;)

In response to Alan:

The price is incredibly cheap.  Food and a place to stay is included, and you can work whenever you want.  We are hear to actively teach you Bonsai and want you to have a good time learning it.

A regular free apprenticeship (such as what I'm going through) is work, work, work.  When you're done, they tell you you didn't work fast enough.  They also expect you to learn from experience and observation and are never obligated to sit down and teach you.  There's more but I won't get into the whole meaning of what it is to be an apprentice in Japan.

I too would love to go.  $4k for 3 mos??  I agree, $300/wk is a great deal.  I just wish I could go.  Sounds very intriguing and a fantastic learning experience.   I'm envious Peter ;))

Peter, I am not criticizing the price, if you read me the first word of the sentence  was "yes".  I just bring here an information  that may of some interest to those who would like to learn bonsai for a short while and don't mind working like a dog during their stay.

Alain,

I would love to read the details for the program, in your own thread, one not dedicated to Aichien.

I only use fresh, dewired, prunings of medium to large bonsai for fuel. Armadillos are extra.

You don't need to know any Japanese if you come to Aichien.  Please visit BonsaiAichien.com for more info.  Thanks!
