Title: A Visit to Topeka
Post by: bonsaikc on September 30, 2009, 01:58 PM
With the difficulty of getting more than one day off at a time, I was never able to get to Oklahoma to Sonlight Bonsai Nursery. This must have prompted Frank to move to Topeka, only an hour away. While yesterday's trip was short, he did show me around and we talked and talked (I mostly listened and listened--j/k  ;D) about bonsai, the rustic conference center he manages, and plans for bonsai activities.

Frank's moving lots of trees up, so I got a few pics of some of his material.

Having all that nice material so close to you must really test your willpower! :)

Nah, it's the wallet that keeps me in line. I'll have some more photos to post a little later.

It will be nice having so much good material so close.  And now that I'm moonlighting maybe I'll have some extra to spend on bonsai instead of such pesky things and food, shelter and college parent loans.

Well keep an eye on this space, Tom, because we have some pretty exciting plans for Topeka that are shaping up.

Just keep your shirt on. I think you will find this fun and relaxing. We are excited about it, but we are easily pleased.

You guys are so coy, I notice Frank hasn't asked for the plane ticket yet.

I can't believe I took so few usable photos of this great spot. Here's one of the main area (although it doesn't get the flavor as well as I hoped) and what Frank tells me is a perfect example of not getting your bends exaggerated enough when your whip is young:

And with that high dollar camera.   When this trident was a whip I wrapped it around a chop stick for grins.  Well it had plenty of movement when it was young but as you can see it grew out of it.

And to everyone who has ever seen my house in OK this one is a lot smaller.  That is the new house in the first picture.  3000 sq ft to 1400 sq ft.

It's what keeps us young, Harry.  Having been born and raised in Oklahoma I feel qualified to say that our Kansas tornados can kick your tornados @$$e$.  ;D
