Title: White Chojubai Koko-fu
Post by: JRob on March 11, 2013, 09:29 PM
Good Evening All,

I heard that at Koku-fu 80 a white chojubai won an award. I was wondering if anyone could confirm and where I could find a picture.

Thanks,

JRob

You are in LUCK!

I remember well that White award winning chojubai! It was spectacular, especially with the single heavy trunk. I even remember where it was in the show.

Although the photo is not the greatest, I've attached a copy.

By the way, since that date in February 2006, I've seen many Red chojubai also trained in the identical style and even in a similar container. There is even one in the calendar I'm looking at now.

Enjoy!

Bill

Thanks Bill,

I knew I could count on you. I recently aquired a white chocubai and I've heard about this tree.

Regards,

JRob

It must be a sight to see when in bloom.  What a beauty! Thanks for posting it.

Sorry, I don't have a photo of that White chojubai in flower, but do have three photos of my White chojubai in blossom.

Yes, I always appriciate you posting pictures Bill.  I'm curious, other than flower color are there many other differnces between Red and White Chojubai?

The red chojubai has a lot more ramification potential.

There are several differences between the Red and White cultivars of chojubai.

Flowers:
Red, small, many flowers, flowers nearly all year long
White, larger, not as floriferous, only in spring

Foliage:
Red, small, dark green, thick, glossy
White, large, light green, thin, dull

Growth Habit:
Red, slow growing, short and compact with many fine twigs
White, fast growing, tall and lose. Not too many twigs

Bark
Red, rough, begins early, dark color
White, not as rough, slow to develop, light color

Fruit:
Red, small, aromatic, not too many
White, larger, aromatic, profuse fruit

Hope this helps.

Good Morning All,

Took the day off work and just finished taking all my trees that are stored in the pool cabana out and gave them a gentle spay cleaning and watered them well. A glorious day in St. Louis. I had a reason for this thread. I acquired a white chojubai this past fall and have recently repotted it. It was field dug and wanted to see a good bonsai specimen of the species. Not sure what direction mine will go but I thought you'd like to see a picture of it. My plan for the for the this year is to get it healthy and hopefully begin working on it next year. Thanks everyone for the the interest in the tread.

Isn't this time of year great and filled with such promise. Last year this time here in St. Louis we had already had several weeks of uncharacteristically warn weather (80's). This year is closer to normal with nights still dropping below or just above freezing so everything pulled out today goes back to the cabana for protection.

Have a great weekend I'll be attending a grafting workshop at Cass Bonsai and hopefully get a few shohin repotted.

Nice Rob!!  And Lucky You!  ;)  It's snowing here today.  And yet, everything is pushing buds, inside my shed and in the ground.  Weird seeing winter and spring kinda at the same time lol

At least I can enjoy your repots and look forward to 'my time'  ;D
