Shohin Crape Myrtle
« on: October 22, 2014, 11:14 PM »
This Crape was collected last year beside another odd crape that I am trying to sumo.  I need to graft  my Crapes including this one. I go toe to toe with Powdery Mildew all year long. It was time for a repot so I took some pics. Its work in progress but here you go.

I'm kind of stuck with this tree . Its starting to rot at the bottom. So I am gradually uncovering it. I'm probably gonna lean it on its roots once its out of the soil. And wait and see if it adapts  and holds its weight.

I am just fooling around with the canopy . It had a nice canopy goin but when I g back from vacation it was covered in Powdery Mildew and died back bad. Any suggestions on a good disease resistant  cultivar with nice flowers.

I will  do a little carving when the roots harden off. Here's a pic of the other stub that was growing alongside the pre shohin. It was abandoned in a corner to grow out to try to heal the wound. But it got powdery mildew and I treated it with a baking soda mix and the leaves shriveled. But it was the only one that the solution had that effect on.

Not sure I really like the arial roots on a crape myrtle, it reminds me of a potato tuber in some of the photos.  Other than that it has nice movement.  I've never had any mildew problems with mine, so can't help you there.

Watch the water on the leaves to prevent powdery mildew.  There are several fungicides that will clear it up quickly.  Milk & water (1:10) sprayed about 2x 10 days apart will clear it up as well.

Hi guys and girls. Judy I am with you the roots are weird . I clipped a few off when I repotted. There is a tile with a hole under the tree. I put the tip of the tree in it to keep it standing. And it works ok So i  I think I will remove them in spring
