Berberis Thunbergii

Rick Moquin:
I like this little tree, I would get rid of that branch (to the trunk) that is heading off to the right first pic.

chris s:
Thanks Irene & Rick for  the tips on the pics.  I will have to take new ones when I get back in town on Monday.  I reduced them to much and now cannot enlarge them.

Rick.  I will be removing that very branch next spring.  I am really not sure what direction I am headed with this tree.  Once I initially started to cut it back I was leaning towards a windswept tree but I am not sure now.

Chris

Rick Moquin:
Chris,

By cutting back that branch that I mentioned it will remove IMO some unwanted thoughts on the direction ahead. It is too large and straight for the size of the trunk and I personally can't fathom it in the future of this tree.

Windswept  along with literati are probably the hardest trees to pull off convincingly, and frankly I do not see that design in this tree.

chris s:
Rick,

The branch is destined to be removed.  I should have done it in the beginning and have been tempted to remove these past couple of weeks.  I just though that it might be better to wait until next year late winter, early spring.  I do not want to kill this tree.  Although I have heard berberis respond very well to pruning throughout the summer months.  The tree seems to be en very good health.

Chris

Rick Moquin:
Chris,

I didn't mean to sound like take it off now! Next year is fine :)
