Trident Root over Rock
« on: September 16, 2009, 09:43 AM »
Here is another trident I have been working on for a while.  It really needs to be wired, maybe next year.  And wish the rock was nicer looking.

I can't really make out anything useful in the rock, as the trident seems to be swallowing it.  Apparently the rock isn't up to snuff ....or up to the ideal snuff at least.  Do you think the left most chunk of roots would support the tree?  If you removed the right-most blob of roots ...and carved it convincingly up into the trunk it might give the impression of the tree clinging to the rock rather than trying to overpower it.

All this is dependent on the rock itself being able to sustain the image.  What do you think?

Just wire it Frank, hammer it back hard with pruning and then wire the new growth.

In person this is a knockout tree.

If you think that this tree swallowed the rock have a look at this one.  Now this is a shame.  Such a nice rock.

Such a nice rock.
How can you tell :D
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a rock covered with such thick roots. How long has the tree been growing on that rock?

I don't think very long.  I usually plant all them in the same area but this one somehow got planted with the non root over rock tridents and was forgotten.  It is a very nice ibigawa rock.  I almost want to tear the tree off the rock.

Frank,
don't tear it off, let's airlayer it off next April. You will have a very sweet little cone shaped tree and a nice rock to work with.
