Don't worry about Walter he is a big boy and has a number of very fine trees. His trees, beautiful as they are are different from the highly refined Japanese trees. This is not a value statement, just a fact. I personally prefer the generally more stylized Japanese version, others prefer the less stylized versions that Walter produces. One thing about the hedge pruning method, it allows you to have a lot more maple trees that the method used by Bill and many of the Japanese specialists.

If you aren't Walter Pall, perhaps a developmental phase (as suggested by Owen) and a finishing phase using the Japanese method would give those who want a more stylized version of the tree.
