Thanks, that's a good method for attaching to the board. I have a few trees that are thick enough for a screw but don't have enough root mass for wiring in!

Another option I've seen is to screw the tree to the board, then, (thanks to a mica pot) screw the board to the pot.  No wires.  You're kind of limited by ceramics though.

If you're gonna do that, why bother with board?  Just screw the tree to the pot!

That's a good question.  At the time, we were in a rush to stabilize this tree and I thought the solution was pretty elegant, but you make a good point.

My larger zelkova?  Mixed results.  I successfully airlayered off the apex as recommended by Owen and Boon.  Unfortunately, the trunk with great nebari did not sprout any new growth and died.

I need to bare root the airlayer and perhaps cut some windows for new roots.  The airlayer did not product 360 degree roots.  Memory serves, about 270 degrees... the other calloused over.  Actually, that effort is planned for today.  (After I do some real estate matters, and mow the grass...)

So, I will now have a nice clump style zelkova forest.

Owen saw it when he was at Plant City Bonsai last month.  I'll try to remember to take photos...

And, oh yeah, I have another zelkova project waiting for me at PCB.

Oh, gosh, John, I've "had the disease" for 40 plus years!

It's wasn't until I started going to Boon's that my eye's were opened to new techniques and possibilities!

It's all YOUR fault, you understand.  If it hadn't been for your gentle nudge for me to sign up for the Intensives, I wouldn't be anywhere near this fearless!
