This is a Trident Maple that one of our senior members at San Antonio Bonsai Society gave me. Last week. He told me to do a complete defoilieation and take off some of the top to start a new apex, and do some wiring. This is my second time doing this in 3 days ever.Not done wiring yet. Stil have to plan it all out. Learning is fun!! Any comments/suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Joe

What sort of apex do you want this to have? Triangle, or round?
Did he give you permission to take off any branches?

Hi Noissee. Thanks for the reply. He gave it to me. Its all mine.  He suggested the defoiliation and to take off some of the top to try to start a new apex and do some light wiring. From what I have read, seems like the triangle is whats most commonly used. I kinda see it ,but I am still not sure. I did use a guy(?) wire to lower the lowest branch a bit and wired,straightened and lowered some of the others. I will post a pic tomorrow when I get home from work. I still have to get some fertilizer. |

I would suggest simply taking a walk and observing mature deciduous trees, especially maples, and see how the branches form the apex.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with wanting to have the triangle styled crown. If you decide you want this, I would suggest looking at a lot of bonsai pictures with trees styled this way.

Now that you've shortened it I feel the balance is off a bit and maybe could benefit from a little tilt to the left when you next repot. What do you think?

hi joe, this is a great start. not to sound like a know-it-all (because that i am certainly not), but i see a couple issues worth correcting on this tree. i believe the trunk is too straight for too long going right about halfway up. it lacks movement in that area, so what i suggest is to develope a new leader (indicated in red with the yellow arrow). this will not only cure the lack of movement there, but it will eliminate the "handlebar" branching indicated in green. this may set your goal in developement back, but i think it would be worth it! hope you don't mind my two cents.

Thanks for the reply Chris.Your 2 cents as well as everybody elses is why I come here. I learn so much from these forums.I have been into Bonsai going on 5 months and I love it. I will keep yas posted on this tree.
