Horrendously ugly Elm ... Help!

Put it in the ground with shale and loess. Chop it just above the first bend. Or better yet. Break it off at the first bend. Water it thouroughly and forget about it for about fifteen years. It will be a very nice specimen by then

 ???Not ugly at all!  Much better than stick in pot with great movement and twists of basic structure.  One suggestion is to eventually remove branch(s) inside of bends.  Can be used until later development to make trunk bigger.  You mentioned tree being in your room ::).  This is outdoor tree and needs to be there.  Will not do well at all and will likely die if kept inside.  Good find!
