Norway maple layer
« on: March 02, 2010, 09:41 AM »
This morning I separated this small branch from a spontaneous seedling in my garden. This layer was 2 years in the making as the parent tree was a slow grower due to its location. This is most probably an Acer Platanoides 'Crimson King' or an hybrid thereof.

The base is about 6" across and the whips on top extend to 6'10.

The plan for the next two years is to slowly correct the nebari before putting it in the ground to speed up trunk development.

I have two crimson king in my front yard. They have some  great color during the summer time.  Best of luck, and perhaps I'll throw a layer or two on some branches that need removing.
