Title: collected red maple.. advice?

i collected this tree about a year ago. it was bare when i found it. this will be its second captive winter. i plan on keeping it in a cold frame. should i completely defoliate?

Hey There and welcome to the forum! the leaves should start changing colors soon, then dropping off them selves.  Once they start doing this sometime around late fall/early winter you can remove them and let the tree go dormant.

I typically don't put the plastic up until the end of November.  By then I've had a chance to remove the fall-colored leaves, perform a light cut back, and clean the top soil.

Where in zone 8 are you located?
