Collected Crape Myrtle
« on: January 26, 2015, 02:10 PM »
I collected a Crape Myrtle yesterday. There was a nest of ants that live under the bark. The tree grew right over the nests.  I caved them out to find live bark under the nests. I declare war on these invaders.! I put arrows on the entrances that the ants used.

The ants have made tunnels through the trunk. They started coming out of the wound were I cut the branch. I know I should cut off another branch. But I don't know which one. What do you guys think?

It had fresh  feeder roots growing from the trunk. I cut all the thick roots and I planted them. I trimmed the roots a little more than the pics show. The short right branch was removed it was dead and full of ants. I dropped some Chicken po and bonemeal and slow release fert on top of the soil. Like a buddy from  Ausibonsai does. let me know what you guys suggest on choosing the apex. Thanks everyone

The tree is too tall anyhow.  If you keep it, I'd chop under that first right-hand branch and let new sprouts develop.

It is tall I want to cut it down more. The yellow line is at two feet . John Geangel has a nice bonsai that is beautiful and it is,on the tall side. I am going to cut more I just want to think it out more and take suggestions. Can you doodle on one of the pics to show me what your suggesting ? Thanks

Hey Sponge

I have to agree with J on this.

It is quite tall and I think that cutting it on the line shown and getting new growth will be the best option.

Hi  Dorian . When I seen last year I planned on making the cut at the lowest branch. But when I went to collect it the ants had rotted out the whole branch. I will flat top it. And see what happens
