get that beech on a budget!
« on: May 17, 2010, 09:38 AM »
Despite telling myself I wasn't getting any new trees, I found what I thought to be a deal to good to pass up at one of the club shows I attended this weekend.  So, I am the proud new owner or my first European Beech.  Lots of work ahead, but also a nice start to a decent bonsai.

Got this pot for like $20 and put the beech in it while i chase the branches back and work on getting it back into shape.

Wow.  I don't hate that one too much.  Looks like you could probably go ahead and get some wire on those branches ...at least for direction.

Thanks Wayne.

I didn't really feel the need to wire the branches yet, as I plan on using some agressive beech pruning techniques to chase buds back as close to the trunk as i can get them.  TOnce those new shoots have a chance to grow a bit, I will get to the wire.  Copper ain't free, and I'm not concerned with the appearance, as I've got plenty of other projects going to keep me busy.

Dave..It is a very nice beech. You will find aluminum easier on the beech bark - easier to get on and then to get off. The wire can only stay on a short time - the branches will thicken and the wire leaves a bad - long term scar. Once it leafs out - very hard to wire. They only bud once per season - cutting the buds and defoliating may not induce back budding. I have found that when you wire out the branches and get some motion in the branches it helps to fill out the tree. Also appears to have a very nice root base - even all the way around. The big low branch to the left has to be protected and developed -it works well with the trunk. Cool tree. Tom.

Well, I decided I would put some wire to this beech.  Another victim of the wee hours of the night.

A bit of color on this one,  nothing spectacular.
