Jerry, I can't wait to see what comes of this.  What are your plans going forward?  Just branch selection and ramification?

Essentially yes.

I started taking some of the dead branches away. When I chopped the branches off I left say 1/2 inch which I though would encourage it to back bud on the branch. No way - 90% of the new growth came straight out of the main trunk.

Been trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to sort out the new growth. The growth is SO thick I'll have to wait till it goes dormant and drops its leaves.
