Are these Trident maple leaves normal?
« on: March 10, 2013, 04:59 AM »
I am so excited that my Tridents have budded and the leaves have finally arrived. However, I am concerned that the shape of the leaf is not what I expected. The leaves have been out for about 2 weeks is this normal for early stages of the leaf?

When I picked them up from the nursery the label said Trident. This is the first season that I have had them so I am not aware of how the leaves looked prior

Just a note:  You'll probably get better feedback if you post those images here.

There are several varieties of trident maples. Some have different leaf shapes. This one is one of those. It is a more specialized variety, more of a "frog's foot" leaf and tighter growth than the typical trident. I have one of these myself given to me by a friend who got it from Matt Ouwinga. Don't be too alarmed... ;D

Could be Miyasama Kaede.  It has thick, fleshy leaves and more rounded lobes.  There are a number of Asian maples it could be though.  Kaede comes from the blurring of the words "kaeru no the" (hand of frog)  ;D.  Some photos of the overall form would help.

Damn spell check.  Kaede comes from "Kaeru no t-e"
