Title: Thuja plicata - Western Red Cedar
Post by: JRob on February 23, 2013, 03:49 PM
Here is a tree I purchased this morning because I thought it would be a fun project. It is a collected specimen. I'll have to do some research. I know nothing of the species.

Wild tree, I am at a loss as to how I would style it. The trunk is wild. I love the 'loop' I probably would not make any changes beyond letting the foliage develop, try to keep the foliage compact. I might play with the planting angle but I don't think I would try to change the trunk. Just try to figure out the best planting angle to show off the dead wood.

Y,our western red cedar. I am from the Pacific Northwest and there are red cedar everywhere. I have been working on a few cedars to date and my advise is to keep it simple. Few branches and keep pinching. Simple simple.
Good luck

I wouldn't think this tree to be at the stage of refinement to require pinching.

How well has it developed this year, JRob?

What a coincidence. I just finished styling a Thuja plicata  a couple weeks back. Not a common tree. It was a garden center find.

I would like to see an update on yours.

Gaffer here
Just finished working on a red cedar and it turned out I think kind of interesting . If you would explain to me how to send a pic I will do that. A little look with someone else's eyes would be very helpful.
Thankyou
