some white stuff is spreading on my junipers, need some help
« on: December 23, 2013, 07:36 PM »
I have no idea what is attacking my junipers but would like to find out and eradicate it, I tried to take pictures and did my best to take a macro shot using a jewlers loupe and my camera phone. It's hard to see but its basically white dust/soot type stuff that is inside the top of the needles, it is killing foliage quite quickly. I checked these juni s last week and they were fine! Please help me id this if you can.

My guess is scale, but I don't have any experience with it or eradicating it. Someone else should be able to chime in.

Just beat me lol  Scale.  Best is to pick it off as much as possible, and spray effective insecticide.

Looks like Juniper Mealy Bug. You should be able to control it with an oil spray this time of year.

I do not think this is scale, i have had scale and I have never seen any scale this small. Again these are pictures taken on a macro level, hardly visible even under the magnification of the loupe. There is a white powder that comes off from this, with a sort of yellowy center...

I'm thinking it's Cypressbark mealy bug, but I see no adults or anything crawling....

I have never seen a bug quite like your images. My first impulse would be to treat with a pesticide who's label indicated it will kill soft bodied scale, mealy bugs, and agleids. You pest likely is in one of those groups.

Are those the ones in the closet? I been thinking fungus. Give em a solid pressure wash and let em air out. Before you dose em.

FYI, I've kept these cuttings inside since summer. I think the difference in materials is huge for the roots.  Breathable clay let's it dry right. As opposed to plastic. I let this get real dry spritz it, then water thorough, when its bone dry again.

Err to dry. And you should be alright.

Disclosure,
Cabin fever is at an all time high in the Chicagoland area. Please be advised that after seeing raccoon balls under sombreros, and since repotting has only described self medicating for way to long, the following content is intended only for those of you who know John Kirby has Big Hands.

Josh,

Since you called out my Dirty Mind, and these cuttings are pushing growth, I figured I'd update. I think the Buxus cutting rooted too.

So when I first read this thread title I thought, "I thought he loved Chojubai?"

So what ever came of your Junipers?

 ;)

We had Boon doing a grafting demo at our last meeting and one of the members had a tree there that had a similar white fungus looking on the crown of a juniper. Boon said it was not mealy bug but.  I can not remember what he said the name of the insect was. Boon said it was caused by poor air circulation.

Don if it is not too much trouble, can you find out what he said, if not I understand and it's not a big deal, but I am starting to get worried, do you maybe remember what his recommended solution was?

But if anyone else has advice please give it, it has spread to everyone of my junipers but has left all my cedar alone. It is killing them quite quickly, the normal home depot shit didn't work, I'm starting to get worried, I have a few quite old junipers that I would be so pissed at myself if I left die...

Sorce, It's like this- the juniper is my first crush and like the first one I went steady with, white cedar is my true love, chojubai is like the exgf that I have great uhh you know, chemistry with, and everytime she is in town she calls me at 2:15 am, does that explain it better ;)

I don't have any way to ask Boon about that. I could hardly hear his reply but I think  he was talking about Isopropyl alcohol.
However I am not sure. That would make since though because we used to use Isopropyl alcohol to get rid of meal bugs on our Orchids. If these insects are simulair  with a waxy coating  then the Isopropyl alcohol will melt this coating away and kill the insect.  Mealy Bug also appears when you have poor air circulation.

I would give it a try on one of your least favorite trees. You probably have some (Isopropyl alcohol) in your medicine cabinet or you can purchase it at any drug store. It is applied with a cotton swab directly onto the bugs . It should not hurt the tree as long as you do not dump it all over the tree or onto the roots. You might have to do two applications.
But be careful because I do not have experience using it on junipers so I can't be certain that it will not harm them. It did work great on orchids with no damage at all.
