RMJ Layer
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:13 AM »
I bought a couple of 'cheap' rmj from Randy this spring as practice trees.  This is a layer I started a mos or so ago off a thick 90 degree branch that I plan on jinning.  ANyway, I have my fingers crossed as if successful, this will make a killer shohin.

Oh, I ringed it but didn't use tourniquet.

That "cheap" tree is pretty nice!  Good luck with the layer.

Thanks Dave.  I'm working with Ryan in the Juniper course.  So I asked Randy for 2 'cheap' trees to practice/demonstrate ability:  stabilization, healthy growth, potting up, foliage mngmt, live vein cleaning (prob. my worst skill right now), and styling.  I plan to sell both in time.  By then, I should have my desired skill set ('should' being crucial lol) and I can work with better material.

Chrisl,

I like the styrofoam box. Looks like it should survive winter.

Is it the whole left branch?

Keep us posted! And keep me in mind come selling time, I may have a spot for one then!

Sorce, I'm not sure at all how long this will take, so I made the styrofoam in hopes of better root protection for winter.  Though, if we have another -15F winter, I'm actually thinking of supporting a grow mat under neath the styrofoam at like 50F as roots grow at temps above 40.

And yes, it's the entire branch past the first 4-5' of that thick 90 branch.  I left every single branch on it, incl. below branches below the rim of the syrofoam for more design options 1. and hopefully a more successful layer.  And I'll keep your name on hand ;)
