Title: Parson's Juniper
Post by: bwaynef on June 24, 2009, 09:16 AM
I recently came to find myself bringing this tree home.  It doesn't look like much at present but I thought it might could be something.  When I got it home, I wished I'd been a little more selective.  The soil its in, recently potted mind you, pools pretty quickly.  I can see that the tree is tied into place, but its easily moved around in the pot.  I had thought that a canopy could be developed by a little wiring to arrange what's already in place and rebar, heavy copper, and some assistance (...with the possibility of a little grinding) as a possibility to bring the trunk into submission.  Any heavy bending will probably have to happen AFTER its been secured into the pot.

I welcome any comments on this tree, suggestions too.

Wayne,

I would like to see the back of this tree.

If it were mine I wouldn't risk a second repotting this year.  You might be able to repot next year, but probably best to wait one more year to do a proper repotting.  It doesn't sound like it's in very good (well draining) soil and it's potted entirely too high.

If you're planning on major bending or carving make sure it's tied in tight with larger than normal tie wires.  It might be best to wait a year after repotting to do this, but it all depends on the health of the tree.

It looks like you might get an interesting shape by bending this one in half and making the other side the front.

Its interesting that you say you'd like to see the back.  Once I put it on the table to take the picture I remembered that what you're calling the back is what I'd intended to use as the front.

Here it is.

Wow! What a difference a change of view makes! I wasn't feeling this one until you turned it around. I think you are going to be very happy with it.

Since we were discussing this one in chat I thought I would play around with some virts.  Rough, but gives you some ideas (I hope).
