This is my kingsville boxwood. I repotted it yesterday into a pot by chuck iker. It was my first tree. I do not particularly like boxwoods for bonsai, (I like satsuki and shimpaku the most) but I keep this tree because it was my first, and many non-bonsai people really like it. It needs to be wired this fall and cleaned out this growing season, so it doesnt look like a poodle  Smiley. Eventually I want to partially burry that massive root on the left.

Greetings.... nice little tree. Are the boards it is sitting on 2x6's? Just for size relationships.
As for the root on the side, I seem to see it a lot on Boxwood. I wonder why, perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I may know that answer.

They are either 2x6's or 2x8's, we have both out there.

Thanks for the reply. My asking what size boards it is sitting on is to get a size of the tree. Obviously if the boards are 2x6 or 2x8 will make a difference.

How tall is this tree from the soil line?

Since this is a study group I could not help but set the record straight.

Buxus microphylla 'Compacta' is an all American plant, much like the Boston Terrier is an all American dog. It was discovered by William Appleby who lived near Baltimore MD in 1912 as a sport on a Korean Boxwood. He propagated the sport until his death in 1923. Upon his death Henry Hohman purchased his 10 plants and and opened a nursery in the nearby town of Kingsville, MD and began to propagate them for the nursery trade. It was released in 1937. At the suggestion of Dr. Donald Wyman, then at the Arnold Aboretum in MA., Holdman named it Buxus microphylla 'Compacta". The first 'Compacta' used as bonsai originated from the Kingsville Nursery, in Kingsville, MD. The name was registered by Dr. Wyman in his 1963 article in the 117(7):50 issue of American Nurseryman. There is really no Kingsville Boxwood.

This particular Boxwood 'Compacta' is a mature specimen. They grow to 12" in hight. This particular tree was collected from a garden in Washington DC and was originally purchased from the Kingsville Nursery. It was planted in that garden over 40 years ago and was removed during a the gardens redesign. It has been bonsai since 2003. We purchased it on 30-AUG-2008 and it was our first bonsai. I figured if I paid that much for it I'd learn how to keep it alive.

I styled this kingsville about an hour ago. It was wired and thinned. Kimura said, "Until we expose the structure of the tree, our plants in pots are just bushes". That is what I went for here.

The pictures are before and after. It is hard to take pics at night, so I will get some more in the next sunny day.
