Title: JBP Sacrifice Branch Questions
Post by: FrankP999 on April 19, 2014, 04:48 PM
I have a few JBP that never were wired as seedlings thus they have a straight trunk. They are 3 - 5 years old. They have some buds or small branches that are in the lower 6 -8 inches which will become my tree eventually. The remainder of each tree has a  straight trunk with lots of foliage to serve as sacrificial energy producers. Lots of bar branches, some with more than one set of bar branches. Lots of candles in the 5 inch size range.

My questions are how to handle the sacrificial trunk part. Do I candle prune it? Do  I remove all the bar branches so I have a trunk only with only one growing point? I am guessing I need to do something to re-direct energy to those precious lower small branches and buds but don't know the best way to do that. I did strip needles just above the lower part so those little branches and buds get more direct sun.

Thanks for your help

Frank

Prune everything off except the apical candle(s). Don't want to shade out the base. If you want more taper at the base, let a low branch run long, you can wire it horizontal to allow other basal branches to grow unshaded.

Thank you for posting this question! I'm sitting here wondering what the next step is for my ~1 year old seedlings and now I have an answer. Cut it all off except the leader. Thanks!

I attached a couple of photos of what I have to work with. Nothing to write home about but It's what I've got. http://izk-zero.smugmug.com/BONSAI/ (http://izk-zero.smugmug.com/BONSAI/)

izk, You prob don't want to prune off those bottom branches/buds. those will be your next trunk section after leader does its job.
would be good to wire some movement low, being careful of those valuable lower buds.

I candle-prune the "final" branches to keep growth close to the trunk, but let the sacrifice branches run wild.  I do remove most of the sacrifice branches' needles in the winter to keep them from shading out the intended final growth, and to keep the tree from shedding that lower growth.

Wire the lower part of the trunks, especially right where they emergre from the soil.
