Okay,

I just looked closer at your tree. Is the tree wired in? Also, Torulosa absolutely does not like to have surface roots exposed. Those roots close to the trunk need to be protected. Use (good) sphagnum moss. The soil particles look a bit coarse to me. What size do you use?

Mostly 1/4 - 3/8 . The tree had those exposed roots when I got it last year and the seller said it had been in the pot for many years. I think they have mostly turned into trunk. I'll add some more soil to cover most of them.
